Carnelian has been used for centuries in jewelry, decorative art, and as an engraving stone. Sard and Carnelian are the same type of stone- sometimes Carnelian can become Sard over time- distinguishable most obviously by color. Carnelian is a true red whereas Sard is a dark red-brown.
