Inspiration for our Ophidian Earrings was born from the discovery of a woven wire snake wrapped around a vintage perfume bottle. We pushed the snake towards realism by adding a coiled shapeliness to its body, tapered tail, a moving tongue, precious stone eyes and finished off the design with locking ear wires. The pair of snakes spiral in opposite directions, a mirror image of each other.
Snakes have long been a subject of great interest and symbology in our history. A point of contention, obsession, and at times repulsion, they find themselves throughout storytelling, shaping our conception of what it means to be inhuman, and consequently what it means to be human.
In Ancient Greek mythos, snakes were associated with immortality and wisdom of the world beyond our understanding. The god of medicine and healing Asklepios Ἀσκληπιός was illuminated when observing a snake carry a sprig of herb, placing it onto the head of another snake, who Asklepios unwittingly killed. The snake came back to life having been cured by its kin and Asklepios learned the skill of healing.
Rubies speak to our inner softness and physical sensibility. Burgeoning with sanguine and rosy color, these stones are charged with vitality and emotional potency. As one of the cardinal gemstones, they are salient, dynamic and saturated in living energy.
