Nephrite
Nephrite jade has been valued by cultures since as early as 6000 BCE, prized for its toughness and durability, making it ideal for carving into tools, weapons, and ornaments. Known for its deep spiritual significance, nephrite jade is called "pounamu" by the Māori people of New Zealand, where it is revered as a symbol of strength and connection to the land. In Chinese culture, jade is associated with purity, virtue, and spiritual protection, embodying qualities of grace and resilience.
Nephrite jade has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. While it is not as hard as some other gemstones, its toughness—resistance to breaking or chipping—makes it highly durable and ideal for carving, which is why it has been used for tools and ornaments throughout history.
